On the 18th of February 2021, Nelson Mandela Museum will celebrate the 31st anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s release from Victor Verster Prison in Paarl. The sudden change of hearts by the apartheid regime became evident on the 02nd of February 1990, when Frederick Willem de Klerk announced the unbanning of political parties and an imminent release of political prisoners including Nelson Mandela.
The formal announcement of the release of Nelson Mandela by Frederick Willem de Klerk on the 10th of February 1990 paved way for Human Rights activists, members of the United Democratic Front and South African Council of Churches members to urgently make reception arrangements of Nelson Mandela’s release. The arrangements started from his personal security, logistical arrangements i.e. transport, home (shelter), crowd management, events, venue where he will address the people etc.
The Mandela Reception Committee was made up of Former Ministers Trevor Manuel, Vali Moosa, Sydney Mafumadi, former National Director of Public Prosecution Bulelani Ngcuka, Human Rights lawyer Dullah Omar, former Chief Justice Pius Langa and others.
The Museum will celebrate this milestone through a round table discussion featuring two members of Nelson Mandela Release Reception committee. This is to give honour to these political idols and to give them an opportunity to share what was on their minds when they were given the task to make preparations for the reception of Nelson Mandela.
This round table discussion will be live on SAFM radio station and it will be a two-hour show between 10:00am and 12-00pm. The live broadcast dialogue will feature the Mandela Reception Committee members Mr Trevor Manuel, Mr Sydney Mafumadi and a Nelson Mandela Foundation representative.
The live dialogue will provide an opportunity for listeners to interact with panel members and to pose questions and through its social media platforms.
