This is a photo of the first committee of Qunu Junior Sec School. The picture was taken in the 1970s. Qunu Junior Secondary School was the first school Nelson Mandela attended. It is also a school where he received the name Nelson on his first day of school. The school started as a missionary school built in rondavel shapes (today only the foundation remains).
It was due to the influence of the Mbekela brother that Nelson Mandela went to school and baptized into the Methodist Church or Wesleyan Church as it was known. It is on this school (which then consisted of a single room, with a Western-style roof) that Mandela’s teacher, Miss Mdingane gave him the name Nelson as it was a custom in those days.
