The Icon’s Journey Marathon Foundation’s 400km Iconic Challenge
July is the month of South Africa’s heritage event, The Icon’s Journey Marathon. In line with the marathon's CSI program an initiative was established in 2018 named Promote Sport for Social Change of giving back to rural communities annually and the birth or initiation of the a 400km charity run for 2021. The Nelson Mandela Museum honours Nelson Mandela on what would be his 103 birthday. Born Rolihlahla Mandela on the 17 July 1918 in Mvezo to Gadla Henry Mphakanyiswa and Noqaphi Nosekeni. Rolihlahla grew up in Qunu where he was given the name “Nelson” on his first day at school. From Qunu Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela moved to Mqhekezweni following the death of his father where he continued to attend school. From Mqhekezweni, Nelson Mandela attended school in places like Qokolweni, Clarkeburry, and Healdtown high before enrolling at Fort Hare.

The declaration of Mandela International day in 2009 by the United Nations was embraced by Nelson Mandela Museum as one of its key initiative to preserve the legacy and values of Nelson Mandela by making a difference in the lives of the needy and to inspire debate on topical matters that affect South Africans.
