BURGERSDORP CULTURAL HISTORY MUSEUM HOSTS NELSON MANDELA MUSEUM QUILT EXHIBITION

Nelson Mandela Museum will be loaning its recently produced Quilt Travelling exhibition to the community of Burgersdorp for viewing. This is a joint initiative by Nelson Mandela Museum and Burgersdorp Museum. The exhibition will be exhibited at Burgersdorp Cultural History Museum for the next six months.

The launch will take place at Burgersdorp Museum on the 28th of July 2022 as part of celebrating the life and times of Nelson Mandela. It will be embraced by an outreach programme featuring Nelson Mandela Museum, Barkly East Museum and Burgersdorp Museum where they will be taking its offerings to nearby schools between 08h00 and 10h00on the day.

Quilt exhibition is an outcome of an existing partnership between Nelson Mandela Museum and the Michigan State University which dates back during the time when Nelson Mandela was the President of South Africa. In honour of Nelson Mandela and support and advocacy in his principles, artists around the world took upon themselves to develop among other things quilt items.

The exhibition features quilts that were made in 2013 and 2014 and curated by Michigan State University Museum and Women of Colour Quilters Network in Association with quilt artists across South Africa.

The exhibition expands that body of artistic work and helps remember the life and legacy of our great leader. The pieces of fabric with different designs and meanings contribute to our knowledge and understanding of how the world sees Nelson Mandela. This exhibition was produced and published on the Michigan State University’s catalogue book in 2014.

Quilt Travelling exhibition will help bring diversity to the existing collections of Burgersdorp Cultural History museums in order to bring new perspectives, attract new audiences, and new works that might otherwise never be seen.

This will be followed by an official launch of the exhibition at 11h00 at Burgersdorp Cultural History Museum.
