Government departments to hand over Library at SOS Children’s Village

The declaration of Mandela International day in 2009 by the United Nations was embraced by Nelson Mandela Museum as one of its key initiative to preserve the legacy and values of Nelson Mandela by making a difference in the lives of the needy and to inspire debate on topical matters that affect South Africans.

International Mandela Day is celebrated globally on Nelson Mandela’s birthday date of 18 July. The celebrations in different forms are an acknowledgement of his active involvement with politics for 67 years. The Nelson Mandela Museum in partnership with Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC), Office of the Premier (OTP), Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC) will mark this day by staging two activities that include:

  • Handing over of the library at SOS Children’s Village @ 10h00 – 13h00
  • Mandela Day Social Dialogue at the Nelson Mandela Museum @ 15h00 – 17h00

The Museum identified the SOS Children's Village in South Africa based in Mthatha. SOS Children's Village plays a significant role in helping children and young people whose lives have been negatively impacted by disadvantaged backgrounds. The Museum, DSAC, OTP and DSRAC will spend its 67 minutes renovating a classroom to be converted into a library. Benefits of opening the library is that SOS Children’s Village will have access to books, reading, homework preparation and group discussion amongst the learners. The number of these children is seventy-three (73), ages from five (5) years to eighteen (18) years. The library will also accommodate one of the community schools in the area.

The handing over of the library will be followed by the Mandela Day Dialogue. The Minister of DSAC Honourable Nathi Mthethwa, the MEC of DSRAC Ms. Fezeka Nkomonye and the Nelson Mandela Museum Council Member Professor Bheki Mngomezulu will be the speakers of the dialogue under the theme: Building a Nation of Good Governance and Stewardship.
